Shot in the arm for ice hockey
DEXION ASIA has become the title sponsors of the ice hockey league organised by Kelab Hoki Ais Saga (Khas).
Khas patron Datuk Lee Hwa Beng said Dexion Asia had been a strong supporter of ice hockey in Malaysia.
“They have been associated with our development programmes as well as helping the all-local ice hockey team – Wildcats – and now they have committed to the league.
“We certainly appreciate their support and hope to have them as partners for a long time,” Lee said after launching the Dexion Ice Hockey League.
Dexion Asia managing director Frank Johnstone said they were proud to be associated with the ice hockey community in Malaysia.
“Khas have made tremendous efforts in encouraging youngsters to be active.
“It is not an easy task but the dedicated officials have made it possible for the young boys and girls to realise their dreams.
“We will be pleased to see the Malaysian ice hockey players making an impact at the international level as well,” Johnstone said.
Khas secretary Susan Loh said Dexion Asia’s financial contribution would be used for their development programmes.
“Most of the players in the development programme will benefit from Dexion’s contribution. We have drawn up plans to groom our players for the Asian Winter Games in 2011,” Loh said.
The league has three divisions. There are four teams in Division One, three in Division Two while two teams are in action in Division Three.
The teams in Division One are Dexion Wildcats, Fangs, Serpents and Venon while the teams in Division Two are Thunders, Vipers and Warriors.
The two teams in Division Three are Metro Stars and Dexion Juniors.
The players in Division Two and Division Three are Malaysians with intermediate skills.
The finals for all three divisions are scheduled for June 21.
Malaysia is also preparing for the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Challenge Cup for Asia in Hong Kong on April 25-27.
