PETALING JAYA: Two MCA veterans won in the divisional elections while a central committee member failed to defend his post.
MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn won the Alor Gajah division's chairman's post comfortably over Ngow Duo Soon. He polled 166 votes to his challenger's 120.
In the contest for the Bakri division's top post, former MCA vice-president Datuk Chua Jui Meng came out tops in a three-cornered fight. He polled 224 votes against Tay Khim Seng's 134 and Tan Geok San's seven votes to successfully defend his post.
Chua said after the victory that he would be going for one of the top posts in the party elections in October.
“I am still waiting for inspiration on which post to go for,” he added.
Datuk Lee Hwa Beng, however, was defeated in the contest for the Kelana Jaya division's chairman's post.
In a David versus Goliath showdown, incumbent Lee was defeated by Ong Chong Swen @ Ong Chong Siew.
Ong, who won the division's Wanita chief for the second time on Saturday, beat Hwa Beng by six votes, polling 82 votes against Lee’s 76.
The 57-year-old trainer said she did not expect to defeat Lee, who is a MCA central committee member.
“I feel calm although it was a narrow win,” she said.
Ong, who lost the Subang Jaya state seat to DAP’s Hannah Yeoh in the March 8 general election, however said she did not have any plan to move up the ranks in parent body's Wanita wing.
“My focus now will be getting the entire division to work as a team. I strongly urge all division leaders and members to come together to work for the community and serve as the backbone of the party,” she said. Hwa Beng could not be reached for comment.
Bukit Bintang division chief incumbent Datuk Dr Lee Chong Meng retained his post by a one vote majority.
He polled 137 votes while his opponent Tey Kock Yew polled 136.
Another party veteran, former secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Ting Chew Peh only managed to secure the last of the 24 central delegate positions available from the Kapar division.
“I will only make up my mind about the party election when all the results of the division elections are released,” he said when asked about his plans now.
In Puchong, former MCA vice-president Datuk Yap Pian Hon became the third last candidate out of the 16 central delegate positions from the division to be elected to go to party annual general meeting.
“As long as I get the passport to the party annual general meeting, it’s fine. There are still two more months to go before the party election and I’m still considering my plan.
“I am still observing the uncertainties in the party,” he said.
