Books and bags for the needy

RESIDENTS of Subang Jaya and USJ showed their support for community events when they turned up in full force for a recent “Mesra Bersama Rakyat'' campaign.

The campaign was held in conjunction with a back-to-school programme where books and bags were distributed to needy children from the flats in SS13 and SS19, Subang Jaya.

Organised by the Residents Committee (or JKP) Zone 1 under the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), the programme took place under canopies at the entrance of SJ Uptown in SS15 Subang Jaya, operated by the SJ Uptown Consortium that provided the venue stage and lighting.

The event was initially meant to be a street party but due to the unpredictable weather conditions, the programme became a charitable affair.

JKP Zone 1 chairman Dr Zamzam Jaafar said the campaign was about introducing JKP to the people.

“The JKP organises many activities for residents, the most recent being the Funwalk,” he said.

Organising chairman Samson David Maman, also the event's emcee, said the event was made possible with the assistance of JKP Zone 1 which contributed RM2,500, the MPSJ community fund which chipped in RM5,500 and various contributions from within the community.

The event's guests-of-honour were Kelana Jaya MP Loh Seng Kok and Subang Jaya assemblyman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng.

In his speech, Loh said the JKP, a concept that was formed six years ago, was an effective body to help residents, acting as a link between them and MPSJ.

“When it was first formed, many objected to the JKP concept. But through JKP, funds are being allocated for activities that benefit the residents.

Developer Sime UEP sponsored five dining vouchers worth RM10,000 (RM2,000 each), two of which were auctioned off via a mini auction carried out by Maman to help raise funds for Subang Jaya resident Yvonne Foong who suffers from NF2, a rare form of neurofibromatosis, which is an illness of the nervous system where tumours grow on the hearing nerves and affect a person's ability to hear.

The two vouchers to dine at the Sime Convention Centre were won by Loh and a resident from SS19, who wished to only be known as Oh, with each pledging RM1,000.

The total amount raised was RM2,800, with the remaining amount jointly raised by Lee and other residents who had fun outbidding each other throughout the auction.

Later, Loh and Lee presented the children with school bags and books sponsored by Wyeth Malaysia before the evening continued with dinner and lucky draw sessions.

Prizes included hampers that were sponsored by New Pantai Expressway, Herbs and Food, Giant and MPSJ, as well as nine hair-care vouchers worth RM600 each that were sponsored by SOHON Haircare.
