IT’S curtain-call for the Subang Jaya Community Youth Football League (SJCYFL) as they crowned the champions of the junior, major, senior and premier divisions in a one-day tournament for the league’s 2007 season.

The finals was at the Alice Smith school at Seri Kembangan, Selangor recently.

The day was a fun weekend outing with more than 1,000 people in attendance. About 250 players from all four divisions took part in the final matches that kicked off simultaneously.

League spokesman Farouk Hashim said the tournament started as early as 6am with committee members and parents among the first to arrive.
The event kicked off with a march-past by all participating teams which decorated their team tents to liven up the event.

“Our boys had great fun displaying their soccer skills and showed great team spirit during the event. The matches were exciting as we had a few penalty shoot-outs to determine the champions in the junior and premier divisions. All the boys were winners at the tournament.”

Farouk added that the committee extends its gratitude to Alice Smith school for providing the venue for the final as well as to staff at SMK USJ 4 for their relentless support during the preliminary matches that were held from January to May.

“The parents have done a great job and I must also commend the individuals and other couples who helped make this event a successful outing. Neighbours who never knew each other became good friends and this strengthened our core values.”

In the opening matches, Junior Division champions the Hobbits thrashed their rivals the Kings at a penalty shoot-out to determine this year’s winners.

Meanwhile, in the the Major Division, the Cheetahs proved their prowess when they beat the Rhinos to clinch this year’s challenge trophy.

In the Senior Division scene, team Hurricanes unleashed its power on Tornados which took a real bashing and Hurricanes became the division’s champion.

Premier Division action saw La Suria defeating Capri to be crowned this year’s champs.

Farouk said the day-long event was also filled with some other activities for parents and their young children, such as a 50-metre race for mothers and fathers and soccer matches for parents and little girls.

“We had a thunderstorm scare and the proximity alarms at the school went off. But after an hour, the matches continued till late in the evening,” said Farouk.

Subang Jaya State assemblyman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng also attended the event. The League patron was also there to promote the Subang Jaya 10-K run, scheduled for July.

Farouk said the players were presented with trophies. Winners were given medals for their effort.

“The season over, we will take a break before resuming next year. But that’s not the end of our community’s sporting activities. Tomorrow, we will be having the girl’s futsal tournament for residents of Subang Jaya. Places are still available and details can be obtained from our official website.”
