Champs in Hong Kong ice hockey event

MALAYSIAN representatives of KL Slayers, KL Cobras and Dexion Wildcats could not have asked for a better start in the World Ice Hockey 5s in Hong Kong recently.

The contingent led by Datuk Lee Hwa Beng recorded wins in the respective opening matches.

In the women’s category, KL Slayers shocked Macau Asian All Stars 1-0. In the International A category, the KL Cobras comprising expatriates, showed that they were superior with a 2-0 win over Shanghai Red Guard.

But the most impressive win was by Dexion Wildcats in the Asian A category. Led by skipper Gary Tan, Dexion Wildcats which is last year’s B category champions romped to a convincing 5-2 win over Hong Kong Amateur Hockey Club (HKAHC).

Wildcats’ hero was Daniel Chew, who scored a hattrick, while Tan and Jamil Ahmad Mokhtar scored one each. Bosco Cheung replied twice for HKAHC.

Malaysia team manager Susan Loh said they were pleased with the teams’ impressive start in the WIH5s.

“The players showed commitment in their matches. It was mainly of the players' active involvement in the Adun Subang Jaya ice hockey league. We are convinced that the league had played a big role in the players' progress,'' Loh added.
