Basketball gaining popularity
MORE non-Chinese are taking up basketball in Subang Jaya now compared to six years ago, according to Subang Jaya assemblyman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng.
“When I started the project to promote basketball in 2002 there were not many non-Chinese players. Now more of them can be seen playing at the courts in Subang Jaya ,” he said.
Lee, who started promoting the game in his constituency, has built 20 basketball courts throughout the area.
In addition to providing a healthy activity for the youths, the game also helps to foster ties among the residents.

“I could only provide the courts and infrastructure, the residents did the rest. And they did not only play the game but have also learnt to organise the tournaments as well,” he said.
Lee was speaking at the Adun Subang Jaya Cup 2007 basketball tournament finals, held at the USJ6 basketball court recently.
Held for the sixth year, the game saw the USJ6 team beat its opponent SS19. The third place went to the team from SS18 which beat USJ 12.
As champion, the USJ6 team received a champion trophy, gold medals, Spalding basketballs and sponsored items.
Wong Weoi Chuan from the USJ6 team emerged as the most valued player for the tournament.
A total of 12 teams from the Subang Jaya constituency took part in the two-month tournament.
