Parents and teachers to taste action

INSTEAD of remaining in their usual comfort zone of providing support on the sidelines, parents and teachers will be in for a more physically demanding challenge as part of the of players' line-up in the inaugural Subang Jaya Community (SJC) Adun–Parent-Teacher Associa-tion (PTA) Ultimate Frisbee Fun Day scheduled to be held at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) sports complex on Nov 4.

Tournament co-ordinator Douglas Ladner said each team would be required to field two teachers and four parents in their side which comprised 12 players.

“Although the tournament is organised to cater to the Form Three students who have completed their PMR exam, students in Form One and Form Two will also be taking part. The only twist is that we are encouraging the teachers and parents to experience the action on the pitch,” he added.

Judging by the eagerness of about 60 secondary school students in Subang Jaya to pick up Ultimate Frisbee over a six-week period during the previous year-end school holiday, Ladner felt obliged to host a proper tournament for them.

“Usually, schools focus on sports activities only at the beginning of their academic year. In fact, the end of the year, after the examination period, is a prime time for children to have fun and unwind by participating in sports activities,” Ladner said.

Four secondary schools – SMK USJ2, SMK USJ4, SMK USJ8 and SMK USJ13 – have confirmed their entries.

Each school will register a boys' and a girls' team for the half-day social meet.

“Initially, we extended an invitation to eight secondary schools around the Subang Jaya vicinity. We can only accommodate six teams in each category,” said Ladner.

On Sunday, about 50 participants, comprising representatives of the four schools, attended the introduction session conducted by the organisers, the Subang Jaya Community Sports Club (SJCSC).

Each team taking part in the competition will receive a box of 25 Frisbee disks courtesy of Subang Jaya assemblyman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng.

“Datuk Lee (Hwa Beng) will also donate RM350 to each school for the sports funds,” said Ladner.

For the seven-a-side tournament, teams will feature in a round-robin competition.

The top two sides in the standings will go head on to determine the champions.

“The event is a platform to create awareness and raise the profile of the game. Spectators who sign up to support their respective teams on the day of the event will also stand a chance to win a complimentary disk. We want the youngsters to turn out in full force and cheer for their parents and teachers. Frisbee is a good game to promote social integration,” added Ladner.

Meanwhile, the SJCSC will also be teaming up with MPSJ to host an Under-18 meet on Dec 15.

“We are expecting about 16 teams to take part in the two categories (mixed team open and girls). So far, a high school team from Bangkok, Thailand have indicated their keenness to take part in the event,” said Ladner.
