TEAM selection has started for the Subang Jaya Youth Community Football League, with just a week to the kick-off of the new season. Registration of new players, has been overwhelming, a spokesman said.

To get the ball rolling, the league has set Jan 27 for its “exhibition day”.

The league is for children aged 7 to 15, who play in teams in four divisions: Junior (Under-10), Major (Under-12), Senior (Under-14) and Premier. Each division consists of six teams.

League official Dr Nazir Abu Bakar said nearly two-thirds of the registration process has been completed.

Practices are held on Saturdays and matches played on Sundays at the USJ4 secondary school.

He said meetings had been held to draw up the fixtures and for skills assessment so that players can be distributed evenly among the teams. Parents have also been given their assignments.

“We held clinics for coaches, team managers and volunteers for the parents to familiarise them with our league system. It is a requirement for parents, either the mother or father, to be involved in managing the events,” the spokesman said.

After the official kick-off on Jan 27, the league will play matches through 12 weekends from Feb 2 to May 18, followed by a one-day tournament on May 25 to determine the champions of the four divisions.

The league has been successful in producing local talent who have represented Selangor in the State youth soccer teams.

Backed by Subang Jaya State Assemblyman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng, the league has set an example for other neighbourhoods around the Klang Valley by promoting the spirit of camaraderie and social integration through sportsmanship.
